How to pick the right music for your wedding day

After engaging the services of a wedding DJ for your special day, a key task in the planning process is picking your wedding music playlists.

Choosing what to play

Professional wedding DJs are highly experienced with musical programming and can provide suggestions that will enhance the vibes of your wedding. If you’re planning on choosing some music yourself, show the DJ your playlist and ask for their honest feedback.

Have a detailed discussion with the DJ about your guest demographics that will help define what music will work. Discuss your policy on fielding guest requests, and your expectations for the dance floor action. For example, if you envision a lower-key event, don’t be afraid to let the DJ know that a hyped up dance floor is not your goal.

How many songs will I need?

Assuming a four hour reception party and 15 songs per hour, you could have a wedding reception playlist of up to 60 songs, plus then there is the music for the ceremony, the pre-drinks and the entrance all to choose. That’s a lot of music!

We catch up with professional wedding DJ’s DJ Works Fiji to get their feedback on what you should think about when selecting your music for different stages of your wedding, and their top picks for music selection should you get stuck for ideas.

In fact there are so many gorgeous photos that we couldn’t fit all of them into this blog! However we will have plenty of additional inspiration for you across on our social media pages, so stay tuned!

We met at a mutual friends 21st Birthday in Adelaide and have been inseparable ever since. We wanted our wedding to not only be about us, but about our children, family and close friends so we chose a destination wedding. We love to travel and after hearing about Fiji from our friends and family we knew it was the perfect place to have our wedding.

We asked friends for location advice, followed Instagram pages, website forums and did lots of internet research. Once you know what you’re looking for, it was easy to find the perfect location and the suppliers we wanted to use. After finding the location and the suppliers we knew we had to have it, it was only a matter of getting in contact with them. The resort and the suppliers were very helpful and able to answer all of our questions.

Bula Bride is also an amazing forum with lots of really good information. We did a lot of research through this website and especially loved reading about the real Fiji weddings.

Garden Weddings In Fiji – Malawai Plantation

‘Ultra picturesque’ are the two words used to describe this magnificent new venue which we think surely must be the perfect garden wedding setting amongst the tropical forest, lush landscape and rolling hills of Nadi, Fiji.

Fiji Wedding Venues are plentiful but if you are looking for a special space that showcases the best of a tropical island yet but with complete privacy and endless options to cater for your event, then we have found it for you in this beautiful garden setting.

Malawai plantation is a lush tropical garden acreage hidden in the hills of Votualevu in Nadi. Its hard to believe this piece of paradise is literally a 10 minute drive from the main roads. Malawai plantation is Nadi’s newest exclusive venue and is available for weddings and private events. Unlike other Fiji venues, this is an exclusive venue for hire and a tropical canvas to create the event of your dreams with few limitations to what you can do.

Set within 14 acres, this property has been family owned and run for over 30 years. You’ll be mesmerised by the lush tropical gardens, abundance of flowers and fruiting trees, with an array of endless possibilities of unique settings for any style of event, even featuring Fijian Historical Caves. The environment is sponsored by organic practices to encourage healthy bird life and bees.

We take a look at what makes this property so special and the top choice for a garden wedding.

Roxana & Anthony

This gorgeous wedding of Roxana and Anthony caught our eye, showcasing every component of a beautiful wedding in Fiji. Working with Wedding Planner Chelsea Jayne Weddings they incorporated their Lebanese traditions into a stunning Fiji setting. We catch up with Bride Roxana on what went into planning her stunning wedding day in Fiji:

We met through mutual friends as we have grown up in the same area in Sydney, we knew each other for about a year and a half before we went on our first date and the rest is history

My husband and I wanted a special intimate ceremony – which was not something we are accustomed to, a wedding in Sydney for us would have meant 500+ people. So we decided to have a wedding in Fiji, as it’s not too far from home, has beautiful weather and people plus that relaxed island feel.

We used Chelsea Jayne Weddings Fiji to help plan our wedding. Her connection in the industry and her relationship with the intercontinental helped us with the planning process immensely as we both work full time and don’t really have that ‘Fiji time’ patience! It took us 12 months to plan the wedding and it was perfect.

We feel in love with the Intercon immediately. Chelsea told us that if we wanted white sand and clear water we had to look at the coral coast. As we wanted a classy, romantic setting and feel, the Intercontinental Resort just ticked all the boxes.

Fiji Farm to Table Wedding Inspiration

Bula Bride lives by it’s ethos — Beyond the Package. Going outside of the restrictions or inclusions of a package or the walls of a resort. So when new venues present themselves for a dream tropical Fiji Wedding, the word ‘excited’ is an understatement.

Taste Fiji Events has teamed up with Aviva Farms to offer a unique offering for weddings in Fiji. With a ceremony location looking over the hills of the Sleeping Giants, matched with Farm to Table style reception – a wedding at Aviva Farms would create an unforgettable experience.

While Australian dress designer When Freddie Met Lilly was in town, we thought it was a great idea to showcase Aviva Farms and the latest in bridal.

Brad & Melissa

Another Bula Bride wedding for you today, and this time, it’s the gorgeous Melissa and her husband Brad’s Warwick Fiji Wedding.

After deciding to get married, they both decided that they wanted to go on an amazing trip and while they were there get married. Originally planning to only invite a couple of friends, the guest list grew with their closest family and friends wanting to join in the celebrations!

“Of all the beautiful places in the world, we knew the stunning and laid back island of Fiji was the perfect place for our family to finally become one. We just wanted a big holiday, with our nearest and dearest, where we just happen to say ‘I do’.”

Leezett Photography was there to capture it all. Melissa joins us to share more details of their stunning Warwick Fiji Wedding.

The Planning / The wedding planning was easy and so much fun! Once I had decided on a resort, I picked a wedding package and we were full steam ahead. Una, the Warwick’s wedding planner, took care of everything. I used a few external suppliers (photographer, videographer, DJ and hair and makeup) which I found through recommendations and reviews on websites and Facebook pages. I wanted a casual and fun affair and wasn’t too fussed on minor details. I just went with the flow and trusted the process.

The Hair & Makeup / Ash and the team from Hair n Mkp Perfectionists were amazing. I had my hair down in waves, pulled to one side. The girls had side braids going back into a messy bun.

The Bride Wore / My dress was custom designed and made by Vicky from Vasiliki Couture in Melbourne. It was ivory Italian silk with French lace (from D’Italia). I knew what I wanted but I couldn’t find it in a shop. Vicky helped make my ideas come to life. She made the dress to fit me exactly as I had wanted, so essentially I got a designer couture gown without the designer couture price tag.

The Ceremony / The ceremony was on the beach front lawn. It was a late afternoon (4pm) ceremony so the weather was perfect and it wasn’t too hot at all (thank goodness)!

We had white seat covers with pink/red gingers for decoration. Petals lined the aisle. We had a ‘cabana’ set up at the end of the aisle.

We had a trio of serenaders (provided by the Warwick) entertain guests before the bridal arrival. I asked for ‘Marry me’ by Train to be played for the bridal entrance and they learnt and practised the song for me. It was so special. My brother walked me down the aisle and gave me away on behalf of our late Dad.

The Bridesmaids Wore / I loved the idea of white dresses for my bridesmaids. The girls wore ankle length sheer silk dresses with a short slip underneath and a side split. Their shoes were big, chunky and white. They had rose gold accessories and funky studded earrings. Everything they wore was chosen by them. I actually hated the dress on the hanger but they had insisted on trying it on. Lucky because I knew it was perfect, straight way! I wanted them to have something that fit the Fiji fun and relaxed vibe and not look too ‘bridesmaidy’. And they really will be able to wear the dress again!

The Men Wore / I wanted the boys to be comfortable and not hot. Brad decided on a steel grey/blue three piece suit. They didn’t wear the jacket on the day, instead wearing the vest over white shirts with their sleeves rolled up and ties on (white for Brad, navy for the groomsmen). Vests and ties came off after the ceremony.

The Flowers / Provided by the Warwick. Pink and red gingers for me, pink gingers for the bridesmaids. Brad, the groomsmen, my brother and our boys all had gingers as their button hole.

I absolutely loved everything about my bouquet. It was exactly what I wanted. My bridesmaids also had a special charm made for me with photos of my Dad on it that I could tie and hang around my bouquet so that he could still ‘walk with me down the aisle’. Beautiful girls they are!

The Highlight / Two things come to mind as highlights of the night. The first was definitely my oldest son, who stole the show as an impromptu ring bearer. As I said earlier, we didn’t want them to have specific roles on the day but my husband decided last minute to give the rings to Thomas to put in his pocket. He told me that Thomas had the rings when we met at the altar. My first response was ‘Oh my gosh, a three year old has our wedding rings’! But he assured me my Mum was ‘all over it’. When it was time for the rings, Thomas jumped up and walked over to us, digging his hand right into his pocket to retrieve the rings. He gave them to brad, gave Brad a kiss and ran back to my Mum all shy and proud of his role. It was gorgeous and I love the photos showing everyone’s face as he dug deep into his pocket and ran off.

The second highlight was definitely the speeches. We had three speeches on the night- my brother (in lieu of father of the bride), Brad’s brother Mark (best man) and my girlfriend Mel (maid of honor). The speeches were full of wit, but raw with emotion (Brad and I both have lost a parent). I swear by the end, every table was a blubbering mess! One of my guests said to me that they have never been so moved by wedding speeches.

The Advice / Trust the process! Your wedding planner knows what they are doing. I didn’t have too much contact with our wedding planner Una in the lead up to the day. At the start, this stressed me a little but I soon relaxed and just went with the flow. I knew that once we were there, everything would work out and I was right. We were Una’s main priority. We had a meeting and went through every single detail. She had everything perfect on the day and I couldn’t have asked for anything more.

At the end of the day, it is your day! It is about you and your husband to be. If something is important to you, don’t take no for an answer. For me photography was important and I wanted the best. You don’t want to look back on your day wishing you had done something different.

Oh and create a wedding website. No ifs, no buts, no maybes. Just do it. You won’t regret it!

Chris & Tiffany

You know its going to be a good when the photographer sends you sneak peaks during the wedding. And that’s exactly what happened during Chris & Tiffany’s Plantation Island Fiji Wedding.

I was so excited to finally see Tiffany & Chris’s day come around. Tiffany was a Bula Bride for over a year. So to see a dedicated followers day come to reality and even more so take my breath away and get me all giddy in excitement was just the icing on the cake.

Chris & Tiffany owned their day — beyond the package, with gorgeous details. From the dress to the florals, the ceremony, the reception place settings, right down the brides hair colour. If there ever was a wedding to be inspired by this would be it. Because they got creative and made their day unique to them. And the awesome Plantation Island wedding team help bring their vision to life.

Leezett Photography was there to capture their day. Tiffany shares with us the details of their stunning day.

The Location / We decided on Plantation Island Resort as we saw it as an affordable option for our guests as well as being the perfect place for all the kids who would be joining our group. We are so happy with this decision and our guests still rave about the week they spent here. Of the three resorts we stayed at, the staff, location and the vibe made Plantation the perfect paradise escape. It’s not too far from the mainland but when you are there, it feels like you’re a million miles away.

The Hens & Bucks / The boys planned a stag do for Chris that had the staff giving him the new nickname of Nappy Boy for the rest of our time there!

My amazing maid of honour, Kiriana, planned an day outing with Hens & Bucks Party Fiji and Sangeeta does such a great job of planning, we got to do so many things that we would have never have thought of. Kiriana got in touch with Seta from Plantation Island resort to organise a dancer for the evening and he delivered five dancers, which was the highlight of my night! The boys did a great job as they have never been asked to do anything like that. Don’t worry it was all PG! If you are getting married at Plantation, Seta is the guy to organise your hens do, especially the entertainment!

The Bride Wore / Rachel Gilbert Miranda Gown, Anna Campbell veil, Samantha Wills Midnight Soiree cuff earrings, garter by Grace Bijoux.

The Theme / There was no real theme. Chris and I have always had different ideas than the norm so we just incorporated a lot ideas we loved to add to the environment we were in. Being in paradise meant that we could have an amazing backdrop which took a lot of pressure off us.

The Ceremony / Took place on the beach. We wanted to keep things simple so had some greenery down the aisle and framed photos of loved ones passed away in the front row. I saw an image years ago of a bamboo arch and it was something we had to have, and the team at Plantation delivered! We loved it because you could still see the beautiful backdrop through the arch.

The Favours / We got some Savusavu chocolate and pina colada macaroons made by Taste Fiji. They are truly masters of their craft and I was so happy I ordered spares so we could enjoy them while the bridal party packaged them all up the night before.

The Cake / Double tier chocolate cake made by Plantation. Delicious! It was so much bigger than we thought so we ended up gifting it to the staff who had been helping at our reception.

The Entertainment / DJ Ranjit – He is the best! He played all the music we wanted and got everyone up dancing all night. Getting a DJ was a last minute decision, but we are so glad we used a professional as it was one less thing to worry about. If it’s in your budget, look no further than Ranjit!

The Advice / You’ve heard it before but I’ll say it again… Trust that your suppliers are onto it. I swear Fiji time is a real condition as we caught it after spending three weeks there! Everything will be ready for you and nothing will be forgotten.

Try not to think too much about every single detail, you are in paradise! Let your surroundings play a huge part of your day. I’m so glad we put all of our trust into the team at Plantation. I was getting sent sneaky pictures from our suppliers down at the beach while getting ready and did a happy dance every time.

My last piece of advice is, if you can, invest in your photographer. These images will stay with you the rest of your life. Your grandchildren and great grandchildren will see these pictures and investing with a professional who knows what they are doing will make your day run so much smoother. Leezett was so calm, kept everyone on time and posing didn’t really feel like posing. We are also so glad we invested in a videographer last minute. There was so many things we missed on the day that were captured by Ranjit and we are so grateful for that.

Last but not least, a huge thank you to Miri, Api, Tema, Seta and Oscar for all that you did for our guests and our family. We are forever grateful to the team at Plantation and hope to visit all of you soon!
