Ten years ago, in the snowy mountains of Whistler, Canada, two young backpackers crossed paths and unknowingly changed each other’s lives. What began as a ski-season adventure quickly turned into something deeper as they bonded over long shifts, cold mornings, and nights out with friends. Among the chairlift laughs and simple shared moments, Sean soon became the person who felt like home to Hannah.
Their love story carried them across countries and years—through snowy seasons, campervan road trips, and countless memories—before leading them to Angourie Green Point, a place where they often went to reconnect and breathe. On a calm, peaceful morning, Sean took her hands, said a few heartfelt words, and dropped to one knee (very quickly, to avoid the locals noticing), asking Hannah to spend forever with him.
We catch up with Bride Hannah on planning their wedding in Fiji:
The Planning
Travelling has always been where we’re happiest, so choosing a destination wedding felt natural. From the moment we considered Fiji, we knew it was the place for us — warm, welcoming, and breathtakingly beautiful. Standing by the water with soft sand, swaying palms, and crystal-clear ocean behind us felt like the perfect way to start the next chapter of our love story.
We chose Plantation Island Resort because it instantly felt like “us.” It’s a place full of adventure — snorkelling, canoeing, diving, sailing, and exploring from sunrise to sunset. Evenings are just as magical, with live music, fire twirlers, crab races, and cocktails by the beach. It offered the ideal blend of fun, beauty, and Fijian warmth, exactly what we wanted for a wedding that felt joyful and unforgettable.
Planning everything took countless hours of research until we found Viva Destination Weddings, and that changed everything. Mandi understood our personalities and what we were hoping for, and she helped guide us through the options until Plantation Island became the clear choice. With her support, the planning shifted from overwhelming to exciting, and our vision finally started to come together.
Planning a destination wedding can feel overwhelming at times, but with Viva it never did. They were organised, supportive, and genuinely excited to help bring our vision to life. Whether it was confirming Plantation Island was the perfect venue, coordinating with the resort team, or answering the millions of questions we threw their way, they always made us feel understood and taken care of.
Getting Ready
For hair and makeup, I went with Totoka Hair and Beauty, and they were incredible — warm, professional, and so much fun. They created the natural glam look I wanted with glowing makeup and soft beach waves that suited the island perfectly.
My dress was the Zsa Zsa gown from Grace Loves Lace. I’d always imagined lace, but the simple, elegant satin won me over instantly. It was comfortable, timeless, and perfect for dancing — even swimming — in Fiji. I paired it with a veil featuring delicate lace flowers to honour the look I originally envisioned.
Our bridesmaid dress was from Model Chic — an infinity, one-size-fits-all style in duck-egg blue. It was ideal with a bridesmaid travelling from overseas, and the adjustable design looked beautiful against the tropical backdrop.
Sean and his best man wore lightweight, beach-friendly outfits from Connor in Australia. Simple, relaxed, and perfect for a warm island ceremony — they both looked amazing.
The Ceremony
We held our ceremony on the quiet stretch of beach between Lomani Resort and Plantation Island — a peaceful, secluded spot that instantly felt like “the one.” With palm trees swaying, soft ocean waves behind us, and total barefoot-island magic, it was everything we dreamed of.
The décor was beautifully set up by the Plantation Island Resort team, led by our amazing coordinator, Tilla. Their simple, elegant styling blended perfectly with the natural surroundings, and our celebrant, Api, brought a calm, grounding presence that made the moment feel even more meaningful.
Our theme was beachy, natural, and earthy, with soft tones that matched the sand and sea. We embraced a relaxed, Fijian-inspired vibe — keeping things effortless and letting Fiji’s beauty shine. Api’s words about nature added a special cultural touch that felt perfectly aligned with the day.
All of our flowers were deeply personal. I created the arrangements using artificial blooms with help from my mum and her friend Ettie, and a close friend crocheted a stunning bouquet in my favourite natural tones. Every piece held sentimental value, making the florals truly unforgettable.
We wrote our own vows, which became one of the most emotional parts of our day. Sean’s heartfelt words captured our adventurous, opposite-but-perfect connection — from my love of savoury to his obsession with chocolate, to his introvert calm balancing my extrovert energy. Our vows told our story in a way that made the ceremony deeply personal and full of love.
The Photography
We chose Ocean Studio Fiji for our photography and videography, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Yoshi and his team were professional, creative, and instantly understood the vision we had — especially important since we wanted to share our elopement memories with loved ones back home in Ireland and Australia.
We were looking for natural, authentic moments rather than stiff, posed shots — especially because Sean isn’t a fan of staged photos. Ocean Studio captured exactly that: real emotions, movement, and the adventurous parts of our day. From underwater swims to paddle boarding and sailing, they brought our ideas to life effortlessly.
Yoshi even took us to the Sand Bank, a quiet, breathtaking spot just a short boat ride away. It became the perfect backdrop for the relaxed, romantic, and playful images we had dreamed of.
When we received our photos and videos, we were blown away. Every moment felt genuine and full of emotion — not just documenting our wedding day, but capturing us as a couple. We couldn’t recommend Ocean Studio Fiji more. These memories are something we’ll cherish forever.
The Reception
Our reception was an intimate three-course dinner for the four of us, set up right on the beach beneath soft fairy lights. It felt romantic, relaxed, and completely magical — the perfect continuation of our ocean-side ceremony. We chose this spot because it kept us close to the water and the peaceful island atmosphere we loved so much.
Plantation Island Resort handled all the décor, creating a simple yet beautiful setting that blended perfectly with the natural surroundings. To make the night even more memorable, we enjoyed an incredible performance by Fijian fire twirlers — a vibrant cultural touch that added excitement and warmth to our small celebration.
Dinner was indulgent yet relaxed, featuring fresh seafood, a hearty steak-and-prawn main, and the most delicious caramel mudcake for dessert, all paired with bubbles and tropical cocktails. Sean, who is a DJ, created our entire soundtrack, mixing our favourite songs into a personal, meaningful playlist that ended with us dancing on the sand under the stars. It was intimate, joyful, and the perfect way to end our magical Fiji elopement.
The Holiday
We spent eight nights in Fiji — four before the wedding and four after — which gave us plenty of time to settle in, meet our coordinator and celebrant, and ease into island life before the big day. After the wedding, we loved having those extra days to unwind and enjoy our first moments as a married couple in paradise. It was the perfect amount of time, and leaving our new favourite place (and our Plantation Island family) was surprisingly emotional. We all wished we could have stayed longer.
We made the most of every moment, spending two nights in Nadi on each side of our island stay and filling our days with unforgettable adventures. Snorkelling and diving with turtles, reef sharks, and vibrant coral reefs were absolute highlights — the kind of experiences that make Fiji feel truly magical.
We also brought home two special Fijian pieces: a traditional warrior blade for ourselves and a warrior mask for my dad, who had just received the incredible news that he had beaten cancer. Both items felt deeply meaningful — symbols of strength, resilience, and the love and memories we carried home from our Fiji wedding.

Overall Highlights
There were so many unforgettable moments from our Fiji wedding, but a few stand out most. Our intimate beach ceremony was everything we dreamed of — barefoot in the sand, surrounded by the sound of the ocean and a soft island breeze. It felt peaceful, natural, and completely perfect.
Having our two closest friends, Kitty and Alan, travel from England to be with us was another huge highlight. Sharing the day with people who have been part of our story from the beginning made it even more special.
We also loved our photography adventures — underwater shots, paddle boarding, sailing, and the breathtaking Sand Bank session. Those moments captured our personalities and the fun, adventurous spirit of the day.
And of course, our reception under fairy lights, with fire twirlers and lots of laughter, was unforgettable. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Tips for Fiji-Bound Brides
One of my biggest worries was the weather — I dreamed of sunshine and blue water, but the forecast showed thunderstorms. Every Fijian I spoke to reassured me it would be fine, and reminded me that they know their island far better than any weather app. They promised to be flexible and adjust plans if needed, which helped me relax.
So I trusted them — and they were right. The weather was perfect, the lighting was beautiful, and the day unfolded exactly as it should.
My best advice? Trust the people, trust the island, and trust the process. The Fijian teams are calm, experienced, and genuinely committed to making your day amazing. Relax, embrace the moment, and let Fiji work its magic.
