While in on my recent trip in Fiji to grab some last minute shoots for the Magazine, I had the pleasure of being invited to dine at the Ports O’ Call at The Sheraton Resort on Denarau Island – by SPG Restaurants and Bars. I kindly accepted and brought along the Fiji wedding vendors I had worked with over the past couple of days as a post shoot celebration.
I have stayed at the Sheraton a couple of times now and always walked past the restaurant and hesitant to dine there. I’m not sure why, I guess because it seemed to expensive, to fancy and didn’t have a view. So I was pleasantly surprised and soon regret my previous decisions not to dine there on my earlier visits.
I arrived at the restaurant with a warm ‘welcome aboard’ by one of the waiters who opened the door for me. Instantly there was a romantic mood to the restaurant with dim lighting, candlights and little booths in which you could take your partner and snuggle in for a dining sensation. The decor has a classic feel to it and as if you are aboard a luxury cruise. The features of the restaurant is the large glass wine cellar in the centre which glares at you in delight and a large mural at the back of the restaurant which gives it a classic feel.
Obviously with a group of 10 I was escorted to a larger table where everyone was awaiting. With the piano playing in the background I was then again greeted with our waiter for the evening, napkin on lap and menu in hand with a short description on how some of the dishes work and the specials for the evening.
Now by saying ‘how some of the dishes work” – there is a certain theatrics about Port O Calls. The Caesar Salad, the steak and the Crepe dessert, all involved the dishes being prepared at your table. If you are after a spectacle then the Crepes’ are a must and what Louise tells me – the signature of the restaurant.
With a chef at the table (Lee from Taste Fiji) we were all awaiting to see what his picks were for the evening. Louise was soon onto him to ensure that they could share their dishes between each other, and what a mighty fine game plan that was with the menu making it very hard to choose from.
For entree’ I chose Vanua Levu Duck – seared spiced breast and confit rillettes with pickle carrots and radish, trompette mushrooms and red onion jus. OMG! So good!
For main I chose the Grilled Wild Local Fish – grilled local fish with furikake crust, citrus poached grapes and tomato sugu cassa. The dish was delightful with citrus poached grapes adding a bit of tang against the sweet fish.
Leanne & Sangeeta ordered the Aged Cape Grim Rib of Beef which was cooked flamboyantly at the table. And a word of caution if you order this dish, the steak is a decent size. Oh and be sure to be clear on how you would like it cooked as they were a little overdone.
All the mains were served at the table around the same time. Each dish was presented with a silver cloche. Once all the plates were placed, the head waiter thanked us for dining, wished us an enjoyable meal and then all the waiters gathered to lift the cloches off our plates in unison. They then proceeded to swirl around the table before leaving us to eat. How fabulous!
Even though this is a fine dining restaurant the servings a large (as mentioned above) and great value for money. One who always has room for dessert, I couldn’t bring myself to order anything. Lucky I got to witness those lucky one that did! The Dark Chocolate Sphere did impress and was super rich. Next time I dine there I will be sure to get the Crepe Suzette.
The night was ended with some Fiji Rum shots (our choice of flavour) in little chocolate cups to tie us over. Overall it was such a wonderful evening, not only was the company fabulous but the service, wine and food was all perfection. If you feel like spoiling yourself while staying in one of the resorts on Denarau Island then be sure to pop by Ports O’ Call.
