How to nail incredible Fiji wedding make up

Ok, so looking FABULOUS in your wedding day makeup is highly important to most brides, but do you know how to do this in a tropical climate? We catch up with Wedding Services Manager & Senior Stylist Lydia from Totoka Hair & Make Up to get her tips about how to look natural glowy and gorgeous in wedding pics, taking into account digital photography and the hot and humid weather….

Wedding Makeup Styles & Ideas

1.  There aren’t that many hard and fast rules with wedding makeup as it comes down to individual choice, but if I had to make one recommendation, it would be to go for ‘naturally glowing and gorgeous.’ It’s your big day, so of course you want to look like your prettiest self.

2.  With hot weather, the key is to go for light layers of makeup light layers of makeup that will still let your skin breathe, the result will be pretty and much more natural. Makeup formulas have advanced in the last couple of years, there’s a range of light makeup textures, from foundations to eyeshadows and lipsticks that will still give great coverage but feel and look truly natural.

3.  We recommend starting with freshly cleaned, moisturised and sunscreened skinp – a smooth canvas means anything we apply on top will look super fresh.

4.  Once skin is clean and prepped, we like to use primer. They’re a world away from the primers of a few years ago. The newest ones are light, infuse skin with skincare benefits and can help your makeup really go the distance.

5.  Our foundation recommendation is to use as light a texture you can get away with. Tinted moisturisers, super-light foundation formulas, even a BB cream with just concealer where you need it are totally fine if you have nice skin. We will also conceal blemishes and shadows and powder lightly on top. Make sure your make up artist knows how to match your foundation not only with your face but also your neck and any tan you may have.

6.   Blush is the bomb! It instantly perks up your skin and can make you look like you’ve had 8 hours sleep (even if you haven’t!). Powder blushes will last in the heat and we love a bit of bronzer on top of blush which can be great to contour and warm skin, if needed.

7.   Highlighter is really useful for adding instant freshness and it looks beautiful patted onto browbones, tops of cheekbones, the very inner corner of the eyes and on top of the cupid’s bow. If you’re after shimmer, we stick with placing it on one or two features only. Going overboard with shimmer and shine can leave you looking like a glitterball or sweaty. It’s more modern to have a mix of textures.

8. Loads of eye makeup during the day can end up melting and looking messy so be aware of this for your Fiji wedding and definitely get a trial if you’re thinking of a heavier look. We take inspiration from the bride’s skin tones. Pale golds, rose-golds and even bronzes are great new neutrals too. We’ll often use eyeliner on the upper lid but keep the bottom eyeliner very light if at all. Finish with waterproof mascara (in case of tears, or ending up in the pool…).

9.   Lips are the last thing we do before you head out to the ceremony. It gives you a chance to eat, drink, kiss, practice lines, etc. without it wearing away. We usually go relatively close to the lips natural shade (or you can go for a pop of red or pink if this is truer to your signature look!) Provide your chosen lipstick to the make up artist to use and then pop in your wedding clutch for touch ups later.

10. Be sure to give your make up artist any feedback if you would like to change something. They are there to make you look beautiful and feel great. If you aren’t feeling this way, it’s very important to speak up. They will not be offended if you ask for changes.
