Wedding | Virginia & Jesse | Plantation Island Resort

Jesse, from New Zealand, went to Canada to pursue his education & career. He found out he had an uncle in Canada and got in touch with him. This uncle turned out to be Virginia’s parents best friend. After Jesse and Virginia met, they were inseparable.

Jesse proposed to Virginia on a trip back to his home country of New Zealand. On day 3 of the 60km walk along the Abel Tasman Coast track, they woke up to watch sunrise in a beautiful private bay. Here Jesse proposed to Virginia in an unforgettable morning.

With friends and family coming from both sides of the world (Canada and New Zealand/Australia) it was easy to decide on a destination wedding. With recent family visiting the country of Fiji and speaking so highly about the friendly people, it was an easy choice.

We catch up with Bride Virginia on planning her wedding in Fiji:

What was involved in the planning process?

Trying to grasp “Fiji Time” was difficult. Sometimes emails would take a long time to get a response. We just had to accept that the resort would take care of us upon arrival…. And they did!

Getting ready:

Totoka Hair & Makeup had recently opened up a salon at the resort which made trials, and nails super accessible. My hair and makeup was done in my room by Ludy.

My dress was part of the Wilderly Bride catalogue from Allure Brides. The style was Marlowe. The dress is the exact opposite of what I envisioned myself in, but after trying it on, the dress basically “screamed” Fiji.

I had one bridesmaid (my sister) and I actually found her dress on Shein. The Groom and groomsmen attire was purchased in Canada at Tip Top Tailors.

The Ceremony

We got married under the wedding bure at Plantation Island Resort. We wanted to get married outside on the beach but were worried about the chance of rain due to the wedding being in March during the wet season.

We went for a tropical pink theme to highlight the “colour” of the wedding. Local flowers including Gingers and Anthuriums were the basis of the bouquet. We wrote our own vows. It was more personable and romantic

Photography

We choose Nadi Bay Photography due to mixed reviews about the resort photographer and the style of his pictures and we did not want to have to worry about directing the photographer. We wanted the photographer to know what they are doing and take care of us. Which they did.

We chose the Associate 8 hour photography only collection with Photographer Merelita. She showed up to my room just before she was booked to start and went to work right away. She was so friendly and knew exactly what to do. I barely had to give her any direction.

We opted for high contrast, moody, romantic style photos. Nadi Bay doesn’t usually edit their photos to high contrast, but they were able to capture it perfectly due to the overcast day.

We are over the moon excited about our photo gallery that we received. Every picture is a great picture, we would 10000% recommend them. Within 3 days of the wedding I already had my “sneak peak” gallery, about 25 photos. The photos are exactly what I asked for. The full gallery was available about 2 weeks after the wedding.

The Reception

The reception was supposed to be at the rock wall at the resort. Unfortunately, there were heavy showers expected in the evening so we moved it to the arrivals area. It was still beautiful and we loved it.

We chose the tropical theme, with the focus on Gingers and Anthuriums. Lots of pink, green, and red. We went for the Waitui BBQ Grill & Standard 3 Hour drink package. The food was delicious! The Kokoda (ceviche) was the highlight for us. There were plenty of options for all dietary requirements (gluten-free, dairy, peanut allergies).

Plantation Island Resort made our cake. We chose the red velvet option (YUM!). We had our own cake toper made that we were able to add to the cake.

The DJ was hired by the resort. We had no communication with him beforehand which we were worried about. But he did great. Friends gave him our first dance song, and luckily he took requests that would get all of our friends and family up on the dance floor. Sound quality was great as well! After the reception ended up 10pm, we all moved to the Brigham Bar to continue the party.

Your advice:

Don’t stress over the small stuff. Some things may not go as planned, but you will have fun. Let the resort and locals take care of you. Also, plan for “Fiji Time”.

I also strongly suggest planning to have your hair up. Due to the humidity, curls don’t last long and hair frizzes easily outside!
