Rachel & James – Toberua Island Resort

James and Rachel meet on New Years’ Day 2013 in a sliding doors moment when we were waiting in a long coffee line while out cycling with our own respective friends in Marin, California.

Rachel heard James’s Australian accent and by the time they got to counter to order their drinks, they’d shared stories of 2 Aussies living in California, their love of cycling and their phone numbers to organise the next bike ride in Napa Valley. It was the case of right place; right time and the rest was history!

We catch up with bride Rachel on what lead her to book a destination wedding in Fiji:

Bride & Groom: Rachel & James
The Date: June 23, 2022

We both wanted to get married on a tropical beach surrounded by the calm blue waters of the ocean. Fiji was the perfect wedding destination for us, as it’s exactly halfway between California for our friends and Australia for our family to join us. We love that it’s a direct flight from San Francisco too!

Bula Bride has a lot of great information all in one website and is backed up with real testimonies and stories from other couples. It really helped us work out what sort of destination wedding we wanted and which resorts and vendors suited our low key style.

Once we’d settled on Fiji, we began the hunt for a small, authentic Fiji resort and found it with Toberua Island Resort. It has 16 beachside traditional bures were perfect for our 43 wedding guests and we were sold when we found out we could book the whole island just for us for 5 nights. Having our own tropical island for a week was the most incredible experience for us and our guests.

We started searching different resorts and locations then found Bula Bride that helped consolidate all the resorts, vendors and real-life wedding stories in one website. We enlisted the help of Mandi Forrester-Jones from Viva Travel to plan the trip and she recommended our photographer, Konrad Thorpe and coordinated with the team from Toberua Island Resort. Mandi’s a wealth of knowledge when it comes to Fiji and guided us to work with the right people for us.

Mandi helped with the destination wedding plans and coordinate the travel for our Australian guests. Like so many others, we were all booked in to get married in June 2020 and when the pandemic hit we decided to keep our plans and reschedule (2x). Viva Travel helped with the rescheduling and our patience paid off with the most incredible week at Toberua Island Resort in June 2022.

Once we got close to the date the team at Toberua Island Resort stepped in to take care of the wedding details including the documentation, venue, flowers, ceremony and reception. They made the planning so easy and stress free. Our decisions were limited to the day/time of the ceremony, what to wear, what to say, flavour of the cake and menu choice, we loved how relaxing and easy they made it for us.

GETTING READY:

My day started with a paddleboard followed by an amazing Bridal body scrub and massage by Talica at the Resort Spa bure with the sound of the waves and gentle breeze in palm trees. I was lucky enough to have Jamie’s cousin do our hair on the day and we did our own makeup, keeping it natural to show of our beautiful Fiji spa glow.

My dress was from Marchesa, I bought it in 2019 and still absolutely loved it by the time we finally got to say I do in 2022. Jamie wore a navy suit, white shirt and tan belt and his 2 sons wore navy pants with tan belts and white linen shirts.

After spending 3 days barefoot on the Island, we decided to make shoes optional and loved that everyone went barefoot for the wedding.

THE CEREMONY:

We got married on the beachfront  on Toberua Island Resort. We had a traditional Fijian theme with wooden chairs, music by the Toberua  Serenaders, flowers braided into the surrounding palms and a traditional Ceremony mat.

Miri from Toberua Island took care of all the flowers; bouquets, button holes and floral arrangements. We had gorgeous pink ginger flowers and greenery in the bouquets.

Our Celebrant, Kalesi, prepared a beautiful ceremony, the words she chose were meaningful and encapsulated the love Jamie and I share for each other. We prepared our own vows and shed a few tears of happiness as we read them. We finished the ceremony with a very special rendition of What a Wonderful World performed by my Dad on his ukulele. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house after he finished, it was such a special moment that will be with us forever.

GETTING PHOTOS:

Mandi recommended Konrad for his natural photography style, easy-going nature and at the time he was one of the few photographers living in Suva, so closer to the island. He was personable and made us feel at ease from the moment we meet.

We wanted to capture real moments throughout the day rather than staged photos and he did a great job. He captured some beautiful candid moments and close ups that reflect all the love that we shared.

We love the natural style of the photos; they really reflect who we are as a couple and our family and friends.

THE RECEPTION:

For our reception, we asked for a u-shape seating arrangement, so we could see all the guests and Miri from Toberua took care of the rest. They organized all the décor, flowers, lighting and it was perfect.

We served French Champagne before and after the ceremony for our guests and after 4 days on the Island everyone had their favourite cocktail from Zek’s Bar that they enjoyed while we had photos.

We chose a set menu of fresh caught tuna steaks, NZ fillet mignon or Fijian vegetable terrine

Chef Tony made a gorgeous 2-tier wedding cake with traditional decorations. The top layer was lime and coconut and the bottom layer was vanilla.

For entertainment, we created a wedding playlist for the reception dinner and dancing

PRE & POST WEDDING FUN:

We wanted the week on Toberua Island to be a mix of fun events with plenty of time for relaxing. We started the week with a Bula Cocktail party where everyone wore their favourite bright tropical beach attire, think Hawaiian shirts, floral dresses and boardshorts.

The team at Toberua went above and beyond with our Hens and Bucks day with a trip to Picnic Island for the ladies and deep sea fishing for the guys. The Hens were treated to the most wonderful day of pampering on the tiny white uninhabited island with massages, snorkelling, our own bar man, Sam and Chef Tony who cooked a freshly caught mackerel for lunch.

The final evening was a night to remember with a Gilligan’s Island theme party. All the guests dressed up as the characters from the 60’s classic sitcom and once again Toberua team did a great job leaving invites in bottles in the guest rooms, decorating the poolside and bar area including a life ring with SS Minnow on it and serving cocktails and appetizers.

YOUR ADVICE FOR BRIDES PLANNING A FIJI WEDDING:

My best advice is to know what type of destination wedding you want and what’s important to you. Then find someone to help you bring that to life with the right resort and vendors. For us it was all about celebrating our love with family and friends and we found the perfect place to do that at Toberua Island Resort.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:

The whole week was a highlight from the moment we boarded the boat to the island. We hadn’t seen family in nearly 3 years and being able to share a magic 5 days with them on our own private island, where we got to eat beautiful meals together, drink fancy cocktails, snorkel or paddleboard at sunrise or laze in a hammock catching up. We will remember our time at Toberua Island Resort for the rest of lives and Fiji will now hold a special place in our hearts forever.
