Kate & Toby – Shangri La’s Fijian Resort & Spa

Toby and Kate met online on a dating website called Plenty of Fish. Their first date was in Mission Bay, Auckland New Zealand where they had lunch followed by a walk on the beach. They got on so well that they decided to have a second date that evening too. Two dates in one day and the rest is history!

We catch up with bride Kate on planning her Fiji wedding:

BRIDE & GROOM: Toby & Kate
THE DATE: 29 October 2019
THE LOCATION: The Shangri La Resort
THE NUMBER OF GUESTS: 24

We chose Fiji as we always wanted to have a destination wedding with close family. We love the fact that we can choose a package and tailor it and everything is taken care of. Fiji is known for their weddings and we had done some research before committing. I looked at the Bula Bride publication featuring the amazing weddings that had taken place all over Fiji. We wanted in on that, we also wanted to get in before rainy season.

We made inquiries at several resorts and looked at their package deals and felt a little overwhelmed with our options. We decided to book our wedding at the Shangri La as the resort looked stunning and it had amazing reviews from our online research. We also thought their package deal was amazingly priced and had all of the features we were looking for.

We did online research looking at reviews from others who have had weddings there and compared packages. We also spoke to some wedding coordinators at different resorts who helped us make our decision. The timeframe was tight as we only got engaged in Feb (Valentines Day) so only 8 short months to plan hence weddings decisions were made very quickly. We had it finalized within 2 weeks.

I came across Bula Bride online when doing research and it was such an amazing tool for our own wedding planning. I loved reading through the weddings and the different styles and locations and the amazing photography. It made it easy to decide on what we as a couple wanted and the style we were after.

GETTING READY:

Our wedding was scheduled for 4pm in the afternoon. Toby and I saw each other the morning of as we didn’t sleep in separate rooms the night before. We had breakfast at 7:30 am together and then we both went into the town to get our marriage license organized. As soon as we returned I went to hair and makeup while Toby checked into our new room. It was all so fast! I spent the day relaxing and getting glammed up at the resort spa with my mum, sister and mother in law while Toby spent the day in our room with the family enjoying some drinks. It was all very relaxed. After hair and makeup was finished at 3pm I went back to the room to get changed while Toby headed to the bar downstairs to meet up with the rest of the wedding guests.

I had my dress custom made at Solo Bridal. They did an amazing job and I paid a fraction of what I would have paid for the same dress in a bridal shop. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a custom made quality dress.

My sister’s dress was from Evolution – the bridesmaid collection. It was actually called the Kate dress. We brought the guys wedding gear from Zara Man and their brown leather shoes from Merchant.

We had wedding favours for our guests which were a handmade cookie the text reading With Love 29:10:19. We placed them in a hessian bag with a tag reading Love is Sweet, Toby and Kate, 29:10:19.

THE CEREMONY:

Location: The Takali Beach, Shangri La Resort

All setup and decorations were provided as part of our wedding package. We did choose the flavour of our cake, the colour of our wedding sashes and my bouquet. Everything else was chosen by the resort and it was beautiful.

The bouquet was done by the resort and included in our package. I chose the style from a number of photos supplied to me prior.

Our ceremony was on the beautiful Takali beach at the resort which was what we were after. We wanted low key and relaxed and that’s exactly what we got. The beach was a little inlet that was quiet and private. Thankfully the weather was amazing even though the forecast was for thunderstorms, however we had planned alternative venues in case the weather didn’t permit our wedding to be outdoors. There was a red carpet that lead from the bottom of the stairs where I walked down to where I met Toby. We had a simple and sweet setup with chairs on each side of the carpet for the guests and beautiful plants framing the sides of the carpet with flax weaving. It was lovely! We chose vows that were provided by our wedding coordinator. We loved our ceremony and the intimate setup.

GETTING PHOTOS:

Our wedding photographer was K Thorpe Photography. I found him from Bula Bride as he was listed as one of the premium wedding vendors in Fiji. Getting the right photographer was particularly important to me as these are memories that would be captured and cherished forever. We reviewed his work through social media and loved the beautiful images he captured.

We were looking for relaxed photos that captured the essence of our day. We loved our photos; we liked that we were taken too many different locations and this created a lot of variety for us. I loved the little moments that were candidly captured. We had a lot of fun taking them and we will treasure the memories forever.

We didn’t choose to have a videographer but in hindsight I would have done this.

THE RECEPTION:

Location: The Lagoon Beach, Shangri La Resort.

We left the decor up to the wedding coordinator. We are a incredibly relaxed couple and were happy for them to take care of this. I did choose silver sashes for the chairs. The setup was beautiful – the beach was sectioned off to make for a private intimate reception. This was done with beautiful green plants and flax. There were fairy lights on the palm trees and the buffet was elegantly setup with wait staff that were very attentive and amazing.

We had a three hour drinks package as part of our reception; this included an assortment of beers, wines and champagne on arrival. There were two menus to choose from, these were the International buffet or the Roast buffet. They both looked delicious but we chose the International menu. The buffet was delicious and our guests absolutely adored the food.

The wedding cake was included in our wedding package. It was a one tier and the flavour was black forest and it was scrumptious.

We had a music speaker system that was setup for our reception by the resort. Toby created a wedding playlist to play through the speaker system. The sound was awesome!

ADVICE FOR BRIDES PLANNING A FIJI WEDDING:

Our wedding was magical and we were very lucky to strike the amazing experience we had. Our planning time was very limited so we had to make our decisions fast to secure bookings. We made our decisions for our wedding based solely from real reviews so felt confident that we would have an amazing day.

We are an incredibly relaxed couple and went with the flow. I can’t fault our day and feel it matched with the amazing reviews that we had read prior to booking with the Shangri La. My advice to other brides is to not sweat the small stuff and focus on what is important to you and your future husband when planning your big day. I strongly advise looking at reviews from real couples, this was my plan of attack for everything as I brought my entire wedding online including my dress, jewellery and wedding favours and relied on reviews alone! A little risky but it all worked out for the hubby and I.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:

Marrying my best friend and having a fun filled day and night with our loved ones, it was magical. We loved every moment and would love to do it again. We are considering a vow renewal in the future so we can go back and relive our special day.
