Brit & Scott – Lomani Island Resort
Brit and Scott were both on separate holidays in Queenstown in 2011 with their friends and had headed out on a night out. They saw each other from across bar and made eye contact, but Brit and her friends left for another bar. Scott and his friend left shortly after in search of the mystery girl. With over 100 possible places she could be, Scott made the statement ‘If she isn’t in Buffalo’s, it’s not meant to be’. Brit and her friends were not far inside the door, and as they say, the rest is history.
We catch up with Bride Brit on her Fiji wedding day:
BRIDE & GROOM: Scott and Brit
THE DATE: 7th March 2020
THE LOCATION: Lomani Island Resort
THE NUMBER OF GUESTS: 50
After extensively searching options throughout New Zealand and not finding exactly what we were after, Scott suggested Fiji and Lomani Island Resort to me. We’d been on holiday to Fiji in 2017 and stayed at Lomani, so we knew the resort and absolutely loved the experience.
We knew it would be a great opportunity for our guests to make a holiday out of our wedding and that we would get a significant amount of time with everyone as we had chartered the whole resort for 3 days. We spent a lot of time talking about how we saw the wedding day and the whole charter unfolding and wanted to make sure that the decisions we made were reflective of who we are as a couple and what was important to us.
GETTING READY:
We set an alarm for about 8:30am and had breakfast with all our guests. Shortly after, I had some last minute details to confirm and organise before heading back to my suite to get ready with my bridal party. The girls enjoyed a glass or two of Verve and lunch in the suite before getting ready. Scott and the boys enjoyed a bike ride and hung out before pre-ceremony family and bridal party photos. It was all really relaxed and stress free, which was the most important thing for us.
One of our guests was an amazing hairdresser who had offered to do my hair and did the most amazing job! Otherwise all other hair and makeup was done by the girls themselves. Being such a hot climate and something we weren’t overly used to, we wanted the bridesmaids to be comfortable in their hair and make up. They are all naturally beautiful and we would have been happy for them to be completely fresh faced if that is how they chose.
My dress was The Aegean Gown from Rue De Seine, Auckland. Fleur in the flagship boutique was incredible each and every interaction and she truly knew how to make a bride feel special. The Aegean gown in Indigo instantly caught my eye on their Instagram and I had to try it on (despite already having another wedding dress). The second I put it on, there was no other dress that compared and the reactions and compliments I received confirmed I made the right decision!
The Bridesmaids dresses were from Carlson, Auckland. The Pina Colada dress in Greenstone is such a flattering and versatile style of dress.
The Groom & the guys wore white linen shirts from Industrie and Navy dress shorts from AS colour, with matching tan belts and boat shoes.
THE CEREMONY:
We got married on the grass in front of reception/bar, overlooking the sand and ocean. The Lomani staff organised the decor and set up on the day.
We wanted it all to be kept very simple and clean with green foliage and whites throughout. The resort and setting is beautiful enough without needing too much extra. The resort communicated with one of their suppliers for the florals and bouquets, however I’d specified the style of arrangement and what flowers I would/wouldn’t like included in the arrangements.
We always were very certain that we wanted our ceremony to be personal and performed by someone we knew and cared for. For this reason and others, our ceremony in Fiji wasn’t legally binding. We had our wonderful friend Ben do us the greatest honour of being our celebrant. When we asked him if he would ‘marry us in Fiji’, he’d not officiated any weddings or planned to be a celebrant, but he said yes and it was one of the best decisions we made in our wedding planning.
Our ceremony was the perfect balance of humour, wisdom and love. We were constantly laughing during the ceremony which is a reflection of our relationship as we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Our vows were no different, with light hearted jabs at each other and admiration for our strengths, they were us from beginning to end. While it was very non-traditional, we loved when Ben pulled out a small bottle of Fireball, from which he, Scott and I all had a sip from before the ceremony got underway. It set the tone of the day from the start.
GETTING PHOTOS:
Laura and Ray from Island Encounters were our photographers. Scott found them on Google and we were drawn to their natural photography style and ability to capture the candid moments so perfectly. We also loved that they founded and run a not-for-profit in Fiji called Island Encounters Trust.
We were wanting lots of naturally captured moments and photographs that didn’t feel too posed. Laura did the most amazing job of making us all feel relaxed throughout all the photos. I loved her reaction when I said I was willing to climb a tree in my dress for some of the photos. Both Laura and Ray made it such a fun experience!
We love all the photos from our wedding day. They capture the essence of our day and scrolling through them we are instantly taken back to the moment and can enjoy the experience all over again.
THE RECEPTION:
The reception was in front of the pool on the grass. We stuck with the clean green and white palette, we had fern fronds with tealight candles as centrepieces. The Lomani staff did a fabulous job setting up fairy and festoon lights over the reception area, as well as the tables and centrepieces for the evening.
To ensure all our guests had something to eat we opted to have antipasto platters with cheese, cured meats, dips, crudites and breads for cocktail hour. For dinner, our buffet menu included amazing seafood – sashimi, tiger prawns, oysters, mudcrab and a whole baked spanish mackerel, vegan curry, sirloin steak, roasted chicken, leg of lamb and a range of salads. The wonderful chefs at Lomani made our wedding cake. We asked for a semi nude vanilla cake.
Additional activities:
We had chartered Lomani from Friday-Monday and made sure there was plenty of free time for our guests. The resort is wonderful in offering a range of daily activities that were included in the charter – daily snorkel trips to nearby reefs for those that wanted to go. We also had access to paddle boards, hobicats and kayaks that we could take out as we pleased. Some of our guests are avid surfers and foilboarders, so they booked trips with Daniel (Lomani’s activity go to man!) to go to nearby surf breaks.
The resort had also organised a kava ceremony the Friday night, when our guests had all arrived, to welcome everyone. It was a lot of fun and a great ice breaker for our guests to meet each other.
ADVICE FOR BRIDES PLANNING A FIJI WEDDING:
1. If you are a details person and worried about being stressed or anxious on the day, take the time to create a runsheet and confirmed details document, as you confirm and plan details with your resort coordinator you can keep track of what you have decided and you’ll have a full picture document for your wedding day. Also make sure you meet with your coordinator and the onsite team a day or two ahead of your wedding to run through it all and answer/ask any questions you have. But also on the day, if something doesn’t go to plan (and there will always be something), take a deep breath and let it go – by that point you can’t change it, so don’t let it affect the rest of your experience
2. Try your very best to remember it is your day and you won’t please everyone all the time, so do what makes you happy! Talk through the details that are important to each of you and why they are important, if you don’t align on everything, that is ok. Wedding planning (much like relationships and marriage) is about give and take.
3. To maximise time with your guests, we cannot recommend highly enough doing first glance photos and majority of your bridal party photos before the ceremony. You also maximise the photo op’s when your makeup and hair are looking their best.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY:
We both had so much fun doing our couples first glance under the trees and then our bridal party photos afterwards. We have such a great group of friends and couldn’t have had a better bridal party to be with us.
I had a lot of fun doing the first glance photos with my family, I absolutely loved capturing their reaction as only her mum had seen her dress ahead of the day.
Every part of our day was great, but we had the best time with our guests in the pool at the end of the night creating a whirlpool… We are big kids at heart and that was the perfect end to a fantastic day!
