5 reasons you must do an underwater photoshoot in Fiji

There are always new trends in wedding photography that grow in popularity among brides-to-be. Once such trend that will suit newlywed couples feeling adventurous after their wedding, is an underwater shoot or ‘Trash the Dress’ session.

These photography sessions are stunning works of art that make your wedding photos one of a kind! The water gives free flowing movement to your wedding gown and hair and creates an beautiful ethereal feel.

Underwater photography adds a wonderful aspect of playful romance as the two of you are swimming through the crystal clear turquoise water together, holding hands.

We catch up with leading destination wedding photographer Lia & Stu on why a Fiji honeymoon or wedding underwater photoshoot is a great idea:

Background:
We moved to Fiji from Hawaii in July 2010. As water photographers, we didn’t think ocean clarity could get much better than what we knew in Hawaii. Oh, how wrong we were! Now nearly 8 years later we are still blown away by the underwater world here. Fiji is also at the top of the list as a dream honeymoon location for newlyweds around the world. If you love the water as much as we do you to will be blown away! Check out this list of 5 reasons why you must do a Fiji honeymoon underwater photoshoot!

1) Being immersed in that iconic Fiji blue water

The ocean in Fiji has a unique color of blue like nowhere else in the world! It doesn’t matter which Fiji hotel you have booked because all are within quick access to this crystal clear water. To us, it’s the ocean’s clarity and the changing hues of blue that make a Fiji honeymoon underwater photoshoot a MUST-DO.

You could be staying at Tokoriki in the Mamanuca islands, Paradise Cove in the Yasawas, Royal Davui in Beqa, Vatuvara in Lau, Namale in Savusavu or the 7-star Laucala Island Resort. All these locations are stunning in their own way and offer a breathtaking backdrop for an underwater session. You may even be staying closer to the airport at Denarau, Fiji Marriot Resort, or the Intercontinental. You will never be too far away from perfect clear blue water for your Fiji honeymoon underwater photoshoot!

2) It’s an unforgettable experience

Although one goal is creating great images, it is also a really fun shoot to do with the person you love the most in this world. There’s something youthful and carefree about jumping in the water wearing clothes not designed for swimming! The shoot is relaxed & fun, and is quite the experience! I love seeing the faces of a couple as they come up for their first breath. The smile is 100% genuine and ear to ear! We spend the rest of the session doing takes and taking breaks and you can read more about what to expect and how to prepare for a shoot with us here.

3) Easy logistics

Fiji is the economic and political centre of the South Pacific, and keeping tourism moving is a top priority. With multiple flights and ferries servicing all of the above-mentioned areas it is easy to get your photographers to you for a shoot. At Tokoriki Island Resort for example, we can arrive on the morning ferry, go out for the shoot, and make it back in time for the afternoon ferry back to the mainland. This makes it possible to not have to pay for overnight accommodation.

Some locations are more remote and only offer transfers once a day, in which case overnight accommodation is needed. The good news is most resorts offer a local vendor rate which helps bring down the cost significantly. The investment may be more or less depending on how remote your hotel is, but logistically achievable. Once you see the images, you will know it was well worth it!

4) Do something! Carpe Diem!

Seize the day! Ok, full disclosure, we love the relaxed routine of resort travel but you can only relax so much! Before you start your third book or take another midday nap, try and get out and see what adventures Fiji has to offer! If you are staying at Qamea Island Resort, get on a snorkel trip and explore Fiji’s spectacular reefs! Now imagine yourself in that same beautiful water, but instead of snorkelling with 10 other hotel guests, it’s just the two of you (and us with our camera). There are so many adventurous activities you can do while honeymooning in Fiji before you get back into your groove back home. Call me biased, but an underwater shoot in these idyllic waters will surely be a highlight of your visit.

5) Breathtaking prints

The Prints from these sessions have so much more power than the average couple’s portrait. There is something about the immersion in water that silences every worldly care and highlights your commitment and devotion. The flowy gown and wavy hair shows movement as eyes stay lovingly focused on each other. The photo underwater shows the ideal space in which you are able to find complete sanctuary when in the company of your true love. When you see these prints hanging in your home you will be reminded of that love, and everyone who sees them will feel it as well.
