It’s these weddings that pop into my inbox, that have been inspired by Bula Bride that gets me all excited! The beautiful Kelly sent me through her and hubby Matt’s day with so much excitement and wonderful words that it made me all warm and fuzzy that Bula Bride is doing it’s job – connecting vendors with couples, inspiring beyond the package weddings, and help to make Fiji wedding dreams come true.
Matt and Kelly met at Melbourne Zoo almost 14 years ago, where they were both working as Zoo keepers. “We have spent many years working in different countries, sometimes together and sometimes in a long distance relationship. We have been so lucky to travel and experience many different cultures, working in wildlife conservation along the way. We never really considered marriage as a path we would take. So, when Matt popped the question on our third visit to Fiji at the Outrigger, I was taken by surprise.” Says Kelly.
Matt & Kelly’s Outrigger Fiji wedding had all the elements that I love. Especially the greenery with a dash of white and a portrait session ‘off the beaten path’; resulting in a simply stunning day.

The Planning / The day after we were engaged Matt and I enquired about weddings at the Outrigger! We adore Fiji and thought it would be a wonderful way to get our family and friends to experience the county we love so much, and of course, celebrate our wedding at the same time. The wedding date was booked pretty quickly after that, I wasn’t going to wait another 14 years for the wedding day!!
Over the next 12 months I was pretty much glued to Bula Bride, I was married in Fiji FB page, Pinterest and Etsy.
We decided to utilise the wedding package and trusted the Outrigger to provide the majority of decorations, cake and flowers that we wanted.
The Dress / My Mariana Hardwick gown made me feel like a princess. It had several layers of tulle and a boned bodice with lace detail. It was quite heavy, but I loved it and danced all night in it. My Nicole Miller (off the beaten path shoot) gown was light and airy, and allowed me to climb over fences, run up sand dunes and wade through water on for our Off the Beaten Path shoot.
The Ceremony / Was held at the Bure Ni Loma Chapel. The aisle was lined in tiny fern leaves and complimented our fern theme perfectly. We also opted for a leaf arch, rather than several flower arrangements at the chapel. The arch had small white flowers and was transported to our reception area for our guests to enter through.
The Cake / Mud cake with buttercream icing. Fern leaf adornment. We cut the cake after our ceremony, following a few photos and lots of hugs and kisses! It was a great way to provide our guests with some food and a drink before we head off for our off site photos. The Outrigger altered the chapel seating to allow us to cut the cake surrounded by our guests. The opportunity to spend more time in the gorgeous chapel was wonderful too as the ceremony went so quickly.
The Flowers / Provided by Outrigger. I had requested a selection of ferns and leaves with a tiny splash of white orchids. The bouquet was gorgeous, and looked quite striking against the white of my dress.
The Reception / Took place at Vahavu. The setup was provided by Outrigger. Our fern theme came to life with vases filled with different ferns, cane hearts woven with fern leaves, and fern leaves tucked into chair sashes. Our seating ‘cards’ were leaves with names written in gold and added to the beautiful greenery. We organised a kids’ activity table with colouring books, card games and bubbles. We chose to have a fingerprint poster of our three cats being carried away by balloons rather than a guest book. Our cats are our babies and we wanted to incorporate them into our special day even though they couldn’t be there!
The Highlight / The whole wedding day was more than I could have imagined. Having all of our family and friends travel so far to be part of our day made everything so incredibly special. For me, seeing Matt become so emotional was very touching.
We both really enjoyed our photo shoot before our reception. The location we shot at was just stunning and we experienced sun, rain, wind and rainbows. It allowed the Kamas to capture the most magical images.
