Q&A With Blue Lagoon Cruises
Tell us a little about your background?
Blue Lagoon Cruises has over 60 years experience cruising the islands of Fiji. Our crew is 100% Fijian and our small ship the Fiji Princess only accommodates up to 68 passengers ensuring that our cruises are always personal and friendly. A maximum 4 hours cruising per day ensures you spend more time exploring onshore and less time on the ship. Visit remote island villages, discover the ancient Fijian culture, sit down to an island feast set on a breathtakingly beautiful beach, swim with manta rays, learn how to cook traditional Fijian dishes, and stop off at the Sacred Islands and Sawa i lau Caves.
How did Blue Lagoon Cruises begin?
Captain Trevor Withers, a young New Zealand stockbroker with a passion for the sea, visited Fiji and founded Blue Lagoon Cruises around 1950. By 1966, Blue Lagoon Cruises had established an international reputation and Withers, now suffering from poor health, was ready to retire to his beloved Waya Island. After much deliberation, he sold the venture to Captain Claude Millar, a well-known New Zealand ship owner. Marine Tourism Management Ltd took ownership of the company mid 2012 and as a result, Blue Lagoon Cruises has undergone a series of changes and improvements. Fiji Princess has been refurbished and we’ve given our itineraries a bit of a ‘jazz-up’ with a lot more activities and plenty more time for seeing, doing and experiencing the real Fiji.

Favourite location for a Fiji Wedding?
We host Blue Lagoon weddings on our own private island paradise, Nanuya Lailai. The picture-perfect island is located in the Blue Lagoon region of the Yasawa Islands and is simply delightful, with it’s white sand beach, coconut palms and soft blue waters. Blue Lagoon Cruises have exclusive access to this long stretch of beach, meaning you can have a private island wedding. Your ceremony at Nanuya Lailai is available as part of either the 4 or 7 Night Cruises.
Of course, you’re also welcome to marry on Fiji Princess, with all the facilities of the ship at hand, and many spacious areas to choose from. The scenery around you will make the perfect background to all your special photos. The option of marrying on Fiji Princess is available on any of our cruises.
Favourite tour group so far and why?
All of them are great and every one is a little bit different.
Favorite place to visit in Fiji?
Blue Lagoon Cruises visit the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, which are located north-west of Viti Levu, or ‘mainland’ Fiji. The picturesque Mamanuca Islands are dotted throughout the sparkling sea and are generally tiny in size, but striking in beauty. Their majestic neighbours, the Yasawas, lie just a little further north. These islands form what is arguably some of the world’s most spectacular and dramatic island landscapes.
All time favourite Love Song?
Every other Fijian song is a love song. There are simply too many to choose from. We love to sing and no doubt you will be serenaded on Fiji Princess. Romantic.
3 things you can’t travel without?
1. Sulu — Sulu’s (also called sarongs and lava lavas in other cultures) are a tropical island necessity. These are great for tying around your bathing costume and wrapping around your shoulders if it gets a little cooler. You’ll also need to wear this below the knee if you visit a traditional Fijian village on your cruise.
2. Waterproof Camera — Snorkelling trips are a-plenty on the Fiji Princess! The colourful underwater world will astound you. Our crew know all the best spots and can give lessons if required. Equipment is provided but it’s even more fun when you have a waterproof camera to capture each moment.
3. Sunhat — Fiji’s well known for its fabulous weather. There’s nothing quite like feeling the warmth or the sunshine as you relax on a lounger but to stay sun smart a well loved hat is a must have.
You can’t beat a Yasawa Sunset. Fiji Rum (1), Khalua (1), Fresh Cream, Orange Juice and Grenadine. Ask one of our friendly staff to make one for you when you come aboard.
